Standardising Fastenings

Hook and loop is a common fastening but between products is rarely positioned the same way. This can cause issues when moving items around, for example, switching items between different wheelchairs.

Screws and bolts can come in imperial or metric depending on the manufacturer and axles can vary in diameter meaning items aren’t interchangeable.

Dr Barend ter Haar is currently working as part of an ISO standards committee looking into the standardisation of fastenings. Items to be considered include:

  • Screws
  • Bolts
  • Nuts
  • Washers
  • Rivets
  • Grommets
  • Adhesives
  • Magnetic
  • Reusable hook/loop
  • Clips/buckles
  • Quick release mounting brackets
  • Stitch/staple/fabric binding/lacing
  • High friction surfaces (e.g.Dycem)
  • Removable/quick release axle shafts

We’d love to know:

  • what you think about the differences between fastenings
  • where you think improvements could be made
  • how you think they could be standardised
